Samsung Booth Spreads Its Wings with 117 HDTVs

A sneak peek at the Samsung’s CES booth revealed this daunting, 117-strong LCD wing. I’d estimate each of those screens is at least 40-inches. That would put the entire television wingspan at 80 feet.

Sony Bravia XBR9 and Z-Series LCDs Get 240Hz and Built-In Internets, Cheapo V-Series Goes 120Hz

Surprisingly, no massive or LED-backlit LCDs from Sony, just bread-and-butter updates. Its higher end XBR9 and Z-series sets finally get built-in internet, no stupid add-on required, while cheapo TVs get formerly high-end goodness.

Yes, that’s right: Sony’s high-end XBR9 TVs—at 52, 46, 40 and 32 inches—ditch the Bravia Internet Module ridiculousness and have it built-in. While it’s no LG Netflix TV, you can stream Amazon Video on Demand and YouTube out of the box. The other notable notableness is that they blaze past 120Hz to 240Hz—also behind LG, who’s claiming 480, booya. The Z-series is similar, but without the XBR9’s wide color gamut cold cathode fluorescent backlight that makes it gives the XBR9’s colors that extra pop.

On the low-end front, the V-series TVs coming it at 40, 46 and 52 inches, are getting Sony’s 120Hz Motionflow and Bravia Engine 2. The S-series crams 1080p into increasingly smaller sets: 52, 46, 40 and 32 inches. And the L series is for your kitchen or bathroom—I don’t really see what high end trickle down they are the beneficiary of though.

SONY DEBUTS INTEGRATED NETWORKED TELEVISIONS
Latest BRAVIA Models Offer Interactive “Widgets” and Streaming Internet Video

LAS VEGAS (CES BOOTH #14200), Jan. 7, 2009 – Sony is bringing built-in, interactive entertainment directly to your television.
The company today announced the first new networked BRAVIA® LCD HDTV models with Internet applications called “widgets” that deliver real-time information, as well as streaming video capability via integrated BRAVIA Internet Video Link capability.
Sony’s new XBR9 and Z-series models feature an Ethernet connection, allowing the sets to directly access Sony BRAVIA Internet Video content using an existing broadband connection. The service offers one of the largest selections of free and premium movies, TV shows, sports, music and more from an array of partners like Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube®, Yahoo!®, Slacker(sm), and others.
Bravia Internet Widgets, powered by the Yahoo! Widget Engine, expand and personalize the TV experience by adding on-screen applications that provide such real-time information as weather reports, stock ticker updates, financial news, Yahoo! Video, Flickr® images, and additional content.
“Internet-based content is driving the evolution of home entertainment,” said Randy Waynick, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ Home Products Division. “Our new networked BRAVIA models deliver streaming videos, access to digital files, and real-time information that transforms the television into a true multimedia hub.”
The XBR9 and Z-series models are also Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA®) compliant, enabling easy access to digital photos, music and video stores on a PC or other DLNA server using the XMB® interface and the TV’s remote control.

This results in on-screen images with more vibrant, “life-like” colors.
The XBR9 models also include Sony’s new Motionflow™ 240Hz technology, which delivers exceptionally crisp and detailed images with natural motion. The Motionflow algorithm goes beyond traditional 120Hz technology by quadrupling the frame rate of conventional LCD TVs and interpolating three new frames..
The models also offer a USB input for displaying digital photos or playing digital video and audio files from a USB storage device.

Sony Bravia VE5 LCDs Turn Themselves On for You, Make Eco Sexytime With Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

The Captain Planet-secreted secret sauce in Sony’s “Eco” Bravia VE5 sets is their Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp, which cuts power consumption by 40 percent.

The 52, 46 and 40-inch sets have a few other green-colored tricks up their sleeves too: A presence sensor turns the off when no one’s in the room and automatically turns itself on when you come back into the room. They’re also Sony’s first TVs with a zero-watt standby switch.

LAS VEGAS (CES BOOTH 14200), Jan. 7, 2009 – Sony took another important step on the environmental front today by unveiling a series of highly energy efficient televisions.

The new BRAVIA VE5-series models offer substantial power savings thanks to a zero-watt standby power switch, along with motion and light sensors that minimize energy usage without compromising performance.

The 52-inch KDL-52VE5, the 46-inch KDL-46VE5 and the 40-inch KDL-40VE5 models (all measures diagonally) are also the first to incorporate Sony’s exclusive micro-tubular Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (HCFL). The technology helps reduce power consumption by almost 40 percent compared to the company’s other LCD HDTV models.

“Sony is constantly ranked as one of the most environmentally conscious consumer electronics companies in the industry,” said Randy Waynick, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ Home Products Division. “Our new Eco TVs represent the company’s commitment not only to saving the environment, but also to saving consumers money through lower power consumption.”

Televisions often are left unattended by children or others who become busy and forget to turn the set off when they leave the room. Sony’s Presence Sensor feature solves the issue by automatically turning off the picture when no one is present in the vicinity after a user-set timeframe. When the sensor detects motion, the TV turns it self back on instantly.

The VE5 models are also Sony’s first LCD televisions to offer a zero-watt standby Energy Saving Switch. When not in use, the standby switch can also be manually turned off, cutting power to nearly zero watts. Simply flip the switch back on and the TV is fully operational.

Additionally, the sets feature a light sensor that will automatically adjust the backlight depending on ambient room light. The setting saves energy and improves image contrast by lowering the backlight when it is set unnecessarily high in dimmer room light.

All of Sony’s new 2009 LCD high-definition televisions exceed Energy Star® 3.0 requirements. By employing a range of innovative power-saving features, the VE5-series sets a new standard for HDTV energy efficiency.

On the performance front, the sets feature Sony’s Motionflow™ 120Hz technology for improved sharpness and detail in fast-moving images. The models also offer a USB input for playing audio files from a USB storage device or connecting a compatible digital camera to display photos.

The models are compatible with Sony’s BRAVIA Link modules including the BRAVIA Wireless Link, BRAVIA Input Link and BRAVIA DVD Link.

The models also feature:

o The BRAVIA Engine™ 2
o BRAVIA Sync™
o 24p True Cinema™
o 4 HDMI inputs
o Single PC, component, composite and S-video inputs
o Favorites menu

Panasonic TC-P54Z1 Viera Plasma: 54 Inches Across, 1 Inch Deep

Here’s what we know: The latest Panasonic Viera is a 54-inch plasma with wireless connectivity that’s just 1-inch deep. It features a set top box sends 1080P inputs to the television.

Here’s what we don’t know: Anything else.

Vizio VF551XVT: 55-Inch LED-Backlit LCD With 240Hz for $2000

LED backlighting in LCDs is the new 1080p—what everyone wants, but usually too damn expensive for the average person. Vizio’s VF551XVT is 55 inches of LED-backlit glory with 240Hz for $2000.

By comparison, Samsung’s 57-inch LED set fetches about $4000. Supposedly, the LED backlighting gives the VF551XVT a dynamic contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. It was noticeably contrastier than its current CCFL-backlit VF550XVT, with darker, more detailed blacks. The gaudy gold and red bar thankfully might not make it to the final.

Vizio’s other new XVT sets—47-inch SV471XVT and 42-inch SV421XVT—don’t pack LED backlighting, but do have 240Hz, and are $1400 and $1100, respectively. And all three have an integrated soundbar with SRS TruSurround HD. We’ll see all of them this summer.

TruVolume and TruSurround HD

Las Vegas, NV (CES 2009) and Irvine, CA — January 7, 2009 — VIZIO, America’s
HDTV and Consumer Electronics Company, unveils several new models to the XVT
Series expanding the performance line with five NEW models. The most dramatic
technology introduction is the use of LED panels featuring 240Hz with Scanning
Backlight and VIZIO’s Smooth Motion II™ technology in their largest model the 55”
VF551XVT. LED backlight technology provides better picture quality with 1,000,000:1
Mega Dynamic Contrast with local dimming. LED also provides faster response times
and higher color saturation so you achieve a better picture. It is also environmentally
responsible because it is mercury free. The VIZIO VF551XVT also has 5 HDMI Inputs
and a speaker bar designed into the TV so you achieve more robust full body sound
from a flat panel TV with SRS TruSurround HD®, and TruVolume®.

They are also expanding their collection of 42” and 47” XVTs to include 240Hz with
scanning backlight using VIZIO’s Smooth Motion II™ technology and Mega Dynamic
Contrast ratio of 50,000:1. The 42″ SV421XVT and 47″ SV471XVT are capable of
outstanding realism and are close to eliminating motion blur–once and for all. All new
XVT models integrate the latest SRS sound technologies like SRS TruSurround HD ®,
and SRS TruVolume®, for a complete all-in-one home theater solution.

“VIZIO is committed to providing the absolute latest advanced technologies to
consumers at a value. Consumers expect great performance and style from VIZIO” says
Laynie Newsome, VIZIO Co-Founder and VP Sales and Marketing Communications.
“You will see this demonstrated in the many new products we are introducing at CES,
our prestigious XVT Series exemplifies what we believe is the BEST performing leading
edge HDTV technology for consumers.”

The Best in Video Performance
Launching two compelling new technologies, the expanded XVT Series offers more
advanced features than any previous VIZIO product line with a complete line of Full HD
1080p performance coupled with both 120Hz and 240Hz with Scanning Backlight.

Using advanced LED backlight control local dimming, the VF551XVT is capable of
delivering the brightest highlights and the deepest blacks. Coupled with VIZIO’s Mega
Dynamic Contrast Ratio™ these sets can provide a contrast ratio that rivals the
performance of the best plasma displays. The use of local dimming to increase overall
contrast ratio and picture quality, especially in brightly lit rooms, allows these LED
models to exhibit deep, three-dimensional-like images.

VIZIO’s Smooth Motion II™ technology steps up the game with 240Hz Refresh Rate in
the SV421XVT and SV471XVT for unbelievably flawless video — frame after frame by
eliminating motion blur from fast-action movie sequences.

Every LED and LCD model in the series is outfitted with the Advanced Glare Polarizer
(AGP) and Enhanced In-Plane Switching (IPS). AGP provides up to 60% better contrast
ratio in bright room environments. Earlier Anti-Glare screens tended to create an overall
haze on the TV image; however, VIZIO’s solution counteracts the effects of ambient
light, while keeping images bright and crystal clear. By reducing the reflections that are
produced by ambient light, the overall picture contrast can be preserved. IPS produces
truer colors at wider viewing angles ensuring vivid and clear pictures even when sitting
off-axis.

VIZIO’s advanced HD/SD noise reduction removes noise and artifacts caused by signal
compression from cable and satellite providers. Each model is outfitted with multiple
HDMI inputs for maximum connectivity with DVD/Blu-ray players, digital cable and
satellite set-top boxes, gaming consoles, and HD camcorders. All XVT series sets have
a Game Port on the side of the set with inputs (including HDMI) for fast, easy
connection of other devices.

Sound Advancements

VIZIO’s XVT Series is not just about superior video features and technologies. Every
model is equipped with audio enhancement technologies from SRS Labs to ensure the
best possible audio performance from built-in speakers. The 55″ VF551XVT and
VF550XVT1A take audio performance to a new level with the integration of a Sound Bar
that delivers 30W of power (15W x2-speakers), enhanced by SRS TruSurround HD™
and TruVolume HD™. All the other new XVT models (SV320XVT, SV370XVT,
SV422XVT, SV472XVT) also take advantage of SRS TruSurround and TruVolume.

SRS TruSurround HD™ makes it possible to enjoy realistic surround sound without
running cables or adding additional speakers. Providing a suite of processes,
TruSurround HD uses the improved SRS TruBass™ to optimize the low frequency
performance of the VIZIO Sound Bar for cleaner bass tones. SRS Dialog Enhancement
ensures crisp and intelligible vocals, while Definition Control delivers maximum high-
frequency realism and clarity.

SRS’ latest innovation, TruVolume HD™ allows customers to set their volume level at a
pre-defined position. Regardless of the content, be it a quiet movie passage or a loud
commercial, there are no annoying volume fluctuations. SRS uses Intelligent Multi-band
Monitoring and Analysis to establish a consistent volume while delivering a more natural
listening experience. There is no pumping, breathing, or clipping artifacts that is
commonly associated with traditional Automatic Gain Controls (AGCs). The circuit
works flawlessly with mono, stereo and even multi-channel sources.

Thoughtfully Earth-friendly

VIZIO is committed to making more eco-friendly products and designs. To that end, the
VX551VXT use LED panels rather than CCFL panels. LED panels do not use mercury,
and are highly efficient requiring significantly less power.

Also being introduced in these same models is Dynamic Power Control (DCP), which
lowers power consumption by up to 15% more than Energy Star 3.0 requirements
without sacrificing picture quality. DCP analyzes image data to optimize the amount of
backlight produced, minimizing image distortion. According to CNET tests, TVs that
meet Energy Star 3.0 requirements can save up to $100 a year, so it is possible to save
even more using VIZIO’s latest products with DCP.

VIZIO guarantees zero bright pixel defects for the duration of the limited one-year
warranty on all their products. Additionally, they provide free one-year on-site service
and lifetime technical support.

Samsung Goes Full LED Backlight with Luxia Series 6000, 7000 and 8000 High-End Ultra-Thin LCDs

Last CES, we wondered where Samsung’s superb LED TVs were hiding. Here they are: Three new LED LCD series—all with uber-dark blacks, the high end with 240Hz, and each just over an inch thick. Whoa.

The LNXXB8000, LNXXB7000 and LNXXB6000 all feature super-slim (”around an inch” for all three) Touch of Color bezels (the 8000 being in a new chrome and clear “prism” finish), built-in ethernet for Netflix streaming, as well as integration of the Yahoo Widget Engine, an open platform for third-party widgets for weather, Flickr photos, etc, that just about everyone with networked TVs is throwing in. Also on board are built-in ATSC tuners—not always commonplace on ultra-slim models. The 6000 and 7000 series will come in 40, 46 and 55-inch sizes, with the 8000 series ditching the 40-incher.

Now, the differences: the LNXXB8000 is the only one to feature a 240Hz refresh rate. The LNXXB7000 looks to be the same deal in a different-colored chassis and down to 120Hz. And the whole line sucks down 40% less power, featuring an optimized “energy savings mode” and a “power indicator menu.” Phew.

And, not to be forgotten, the traditional CCFL LCDs got a bump too, with 240Hz Motion Plus now standard on the new 7-series 750 LCD line. Series 6 LCDs and Series 8 Plasmas also were touched by the refresh wand—full details below.

Again, we’re gonna see ‘em all in the first half of 2009, and prices are yet to be announced.

SAMSUNG USHERS IN NEW ERA FOR FLAT-PANEL TELEVISION
WITH NEW CATEGORY LINE-UP OF LED LCD HDTVS

LED Technology Brings Higher Contrast Ratios, Slimmer Designs and
Improved Energy Efficiency to the Living Room

LAS VEGAS, January 7, 2009 – Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and
award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, raises the bar for flat-panel TVs
everywhere with the launch of an entirely new line-up of advanced LED HDTVs.
Samsung’s latest HDTVs will be on display at Booth #11033 during the International
Consumer Electronics Show, which will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center,
January 8 -11, 2009.

The new 8000, 7000 and 6000 Series build upon the success of Samsung’s first and
second generation LED HDTV models. These cutting-edge TVs use LEDs as their
primary light source, rather than traditional Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL).
Benefits of using LEDs include ultra-high contrast ratios, slim depths that allow for more
artful designs, plus increased energy savings. In addition, a variety of state-of-the-art
networking features give the ability to adapt to how consumers view and experience
with shows, movies, games and other multimedia at home.

“Samsung has proven LED technology is a viable choice for consumers desiring the
best picture possible from an LCD television. Samsung’s latest LED televisions redefine
the standards for viewing quality, energy-efficiency and home entertainment décor,”
said Jonas Tanenbaum, Vice President of LCD HDTV Marketing at Samsung
Electronics America. “Samsung stays committed to developing technology and products
that go beyond current expectations of value, quality and innovation. And, we are
excited to be a part of this exciting point in TV evolution.”

Top-Notch Picture Quality
Each of the three Samsung LED HDTV Series for 2009 boast high dynamic contrast
ratios, complements of Samsung’s ground breaking LED light source. Compared to a
traditional CCFL, LEDs produce darker blacks that appear endlessly deep to the eye.
Whites also remain crisp and bright with vivid colors. The result is picture quality that
measures up to the natural beauty of life. For instance, Samsung’s Wide Color
Enhancer Pro feature lets consumers enjoy a broader color palette. The Ultra Clear
Panel further allows the preservation of every detail even in brightly-lit, imperfect
viewing conditions. This is done by effectively allowing more light to pass through the
screen and simultaneously reducing reflections from ambient light. And with an adaptive
“Natural” mode, Samsung’s LED HDTVs can combine the recognized brightness
advantage of LCD displays with the cinema-like viewing experience of plasma displays
by automatically optimizing picture settings.

Samsung’s entire LED HDTV line-up incorporates a number of innovative features to
reduce the motion blur and image judder, which traditionally plague LCD HDTVs when
displaying fast movement. All three series boast Samsung’s acclaimed Auto Motion
Plus™ frame interpolation technology. The 8000 Series uses a swift refresh rate of
240Hz – four times the rate of other TVs – that nearly eliminates the ill effects of
displaying quick, action-packed motion. The 7000 and 6000 Series, with an also-quick
120Hz refresh rate helps ensure crisp, easy viewing of sports, video games and movies.

Expansive Networking and Entertainment Possibilities
In 2009, Samsung plans to redefine what it means to watch television with
“Internet@TV - Content Service” Developed with Yahoo!, the Internet information
interface will be available on a number of 2009-model Samsung HDTVs. Using either a
wired or wireless Ethernet connection included in the 8000 and 7000 Series,
“Internet@TV - Content Service” lets consumers access content onscreen from Yahoo!,
Flickr, YouTube and more with the push of a button. The widgets-based interface and
scrollbar run along the bottom of the screen for easy browsing of the latest programs
and content. Even after purchase, consumers will be able to enjoy a growing library of
widgets, as the widget development kit will be open to content providers willing to create
new offerings. The 6000 Series includes access to Samsung’s InfoLink™ RSS service,
which can instantly display updated news, sports, weather and stocks information with a
touch of the remote.
Beyond online entertainment, Samsung’s LED HDTVs can also connect to a variety of
other devices and content with ease. Included USB ports make viewing videos and
photos from a camcorder, playing music from a media player or accessing multimedia
files from a portable drive simple.

Lighting the Way for Functional Design
Samsung’s new LED HDTVs offer not only a lifelike viewing experience and a portal to
the latest entertainment, but break free from the conventional limits of integrating a
television into a room’s décor. By using LEDs, Samsung has been able to shave all
three series down to ultra-thin depths. At just over an inch thick, the sets remain trim
without cutting back on connectivity options, nor foregoing an ATSC tuner.
To further complement the svelte design of the new LED HDTVs, Samsung created an
ultra-slim wall-mount solution – reducing the gap between the TV and the wall to around
0.6 inches, down from the two inches of bulkier solutions. The ultra-thin LED HDTV
depth coupled with the new wall-mount solution allows for a simple installation akin to
hanging a picture frame.
In 2008, Samsung created its unique Touch of Color™ (ToC™) design, which uses
dual-injection molding to coat a translucent, colored surface to achieve an attractive
crystalline appearance. The latest evolution of Samsung’s ToC™ design begins with a
deep piano black bezel that fades into distinct chrome that finishes as a clear prism
along the outer edges (8000 Series) or light ruby (7000 and 6000 Series) highlights. The
intensity of the color subtly changes depending upon the viewing angle, and further
accentuates these TV’s slim bezels.

Going Greener
Lit by LEDs the Samsung 8000, 7000 and 6000 Series all meet the more stringent
Energy Star® v3.0 guidelines by cutting power consumption to significantly new lows.
LEDs are also mercury-free, which adds another degree of environmental friendliness
and safety compared with other currently available backlight technologies. Energy
consumption is reduced by 40%+ versus traditional LCD HDTVs of similar size. The
LED HDTVs also include an optimized energy savings mode that adjusts the backlight
and picture quality while continuing to produce smoother, more natural images.

SAMSUNG’S 1080P LCD HDTVs COUPLE ENERGY-EFFICIENCY
WITH ADVANCED PICTURE QUALITY

Compliance With New Energy Star® v3.0 Guidelines Help Consumers Save and Go Green;
Auto Motion Plus™ Technology Delivers Stellar Picture Quality
LAS VEGAS, January 7, 2009 – Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and
award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, today unveiled its next-generation
LCD HDTV lineup with CCFL backlighting. The LCD HDTV line-up is led by the Series
7, which is the company’s first CCFL-backlit LCD TV with a 240Hz refresh rate.
Samsung’s line of LCD HDTVs will be on display at Booth #11033 during the
International Consumer Electronics Show, which will be held at the Las Vegas
Convention Center, January 8 -11, 2009.
“We are proud and excited to deliver consumers Samsung’s first CCFL-backlit 240Hz
LCD HDTV to consumers,” said Jonas Tanenbaum, Vice President of LCD HDTV
Marketing at Samsung Electronics America Inc. “Samsung continues to push the
envelope in terms of technology and design innovation, and consumers will experience
even better clarity, more vibrant colors and unprecedented networking capabilities
available on Samsung’s newest line-up of LCDs.”
The Series 7 features a fast 240Hz refresh rate, a speed twice that of current 120Hz
sets, and quadruple that of standard HDTVs. The refresh rate and a faster panel work
together with Samsung’s proprietary Auto Motion Plus™ 240Hz frame interpolation
technology, to eliminate motion blur and judder with fast-action material, for stunning
motion detail.
Both the Series 7 and Series 6 650 (32-inch and larger) LCD HDTVs impress with
Samsung’s improved Ultra Clear panel, a polarizer that reflects room light to produce
deeper, darker black tones and bolder colors. By enhancing the performance of the new
polarizer, the reflection rate is decreased significantly from previous versions, making
blacks even darker, regardless of the ambient lighting conditions in the room. Both
Series also feature Samsung’s adaptive contrast picture setting, called “Natural” mode,
which combines the brightness advantage of LCD displays and the cinema-like viewing
experience of plasma displays. The result is a new level of video richness perfect for
viewing films.
Additionally, both the Series 7 and 6 feature low power consumption, thus saving
energy and money for the consumer. They meet the more stringent Energy Star® v3.0
efficiency guidelines.
Recognizing the need for HDTVs to not only be technologically advanced, but also
aesthetically pleasing, the HDTVs all feature Samsung’s new Touch of Color™ (ToC™)
design. The unique ToC™ frame is produced by using dual-injection molding
technology to luxuriously coat a translucent surface over the chassis.
Series 7
Superior Picture Quality
The 240Hz Series 7 LCD HDTV offers an excellent option for home theater enthusiasts
who are focused on high-performance LCD picture quality and innovative product
design. The HDTV’s swift 240Hz refresh rate and Auto Motion Plus™ technology,
Samsung’s proprietary frame-interpolation technology, work in tandem to produce
viewing quality comparable to that of the best CRT displays.
Samsung’s exclusive Wide Color Enhancer 3 technology maps source colors to the
panel’s color space. This results in exceptionally vibrant, yet natural-looking images
faithful to the director’s original intent.
Advanced Design
In addition to the new ToC™ design, the Series 7 also sports a transparent bar that runs
across its bottom bezel. The bar clearly divides the TV from the speaker compartment
which houses a pair of down-firing speakers. It further serves to highlight the glass-like
quality of the set’s frame while giving the illusion that the display floats in mid-air. With a
stand constructed using transparent reinforced glass, this stunning look is heightened
even more.
Connectivity Features
Equipped with impressive networking skills, Series 7 LCDs feature Samsung’s new
Internet@TV – Content Service. Powered by the revolutionary Yahoo! Widget Engine,
users will be able to access widget-based content from a wide array of Yahoo! Internet
sources including Flickr, News, Weather and Finance along with future 3rd party
providers as they become available. For added flexibility, the Series 7 goes beyond its
built-in wired Ethernet connection, and supports 802.11a/b/g/n wireless networking
capabilities via a wireless USB dongle. What’s more, the Series 7 is DLNA certified and
supports wireless connections allowing viewers to easily enjoy their PC-based music,
video, and pictures from any room in their home. .
Series 6
Auto Motion Plus™ 120Hz
Available on all Series 6 models 32-inches or larger, Samsung’s proprietary Auto Motion
Plus™ 120Hz frame-interpolation technology virtually eliminates motion blur and judder.
Furthermore, the advanced panel has a fast pixel response time to produce razor sharp
images even with fast-paced motion in action scenes.
Touch of Color™
Further reinforcing Samsung’s commitment to innovative design and high performance,
the Series 6 distinguishes itself with a ToC™ design reminiscent of a beautifully blown
wine glass. Taking a cue from the popular Bordeaux series, Samsung carries this
fashion-forward look further by applying transparent color to the TV’s four edges. A two-
tone gradation of transparent ruby color yields a much softer, glassier look for the
deeper and wider curve at the bottom of the bezel. The color does not appear from the
front but at the sides, resulting in a lighter and unobtrusive design compared to previous
ToC™ models.
A Multimedia Hub
Just like Series 7 sets, the 2009 Series 6 650 (40-inch and larger) HDTVs also feature
the Yahoo!-driven Internet@TV – Content Service. Made possible with a collaboration
with Yahoo!, Internet@TV – Content Service is widget-based and delivers a whole new
level of connectivity by providing access to Internet-based multimedia content from
Flickr and other Yahoo! services. With a click of the remote control, these widgets are
easily accessed via a bar-style graphic user interface which sits on the bottom of the
screen. Using an optional wireless dongle, the Series 6 is also wireless DLNA compliant
allowing for simpler access to multimedia stored on household computers.

The Series 7 ranges in panel sizes of 40, 46, and 52 inches. Series 6 sizes, on the other
hand, extend much more broadly.19, 22, 32, 37, 40, 46, and 55. Both the series 7 and 6
will be available by the 1st half of 2009.

I guess JVC’s new HDTV with a built-in Blu-ray player is a nice idea, but the 1080p set has no details regarding its ability to do BD live. It also reminds us of this:

RCA Small Wonder EZ209HD: $120 MicroSD High Def Recording

While RCA debuted their Small Wonder camcorders at CES 2008, the model they are showing off just a year later looks vastly improved.

While it’s still surely a mediocre HD camcorder (I mean, it’s $120), the EZ209HD is smaller than its predecessors, ditching the SD slot to save space with up to 16GB of MicroSD, while still fitting a larger, 2-inch LCD screen.

Recording up to two hours of video on a single charge, the EZ209HD supports HD, SD and 60fps shooting. Plus it takes 8MP stills and includes HDMI out for direct-to-TV viewing of your footage. All-in-all, the new Small Wonder appears to be much nicer than older models—though you’ll have to wait until spring to buy one.

Also, if you are at the show, the RCA/Audiovox booth will be giving away 4,000 30 of these camcorders. Boy did I mishear that one. They’re giving away 10,000 keychains though.

D-Link SideStage, Because Everybody Could Use An Extra Monitor

Maybe it’s because I just re-read Watchmen, but the idea of getting D-Link’s SideStage, a bonus 7″ USB-powered display for extra video monitoring, sounds like a really good one.

The thing isn’t exactly lightweight at 1.3 lbs, but it’s nice and small, and displays 800×480 resolution. Since it’s both driven and powered by USB 2.0, I can’t imagine it’s super fast on the refresh, either, but then again, it probably depends more on what else you have going on. My sense from reading the press release below is that it’s PC only, but so are most of the cool USB-video products out there. No pricing yet, but stay tuned.

D-LINK INTRODUCES ‘SIDESTAGE™’, A USB-POWERED MONITOR FOR MULTI-TASKING PC USERS

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2009 - You’ve embraced interactive computing and your desktop proves it. All sorts of cool widgets, gadgets and programs keep you informed in real time.

The problem is, you also need to get some work done. D-Link, the end-to-end network solutions provider for consumers and business, has made it easy to move your desktop to a side monitor, freeing your main monitor for productivity with the introduction of the D-Link® SideStage™.

The Fountain Valley, Calif.-based company is introducing the SideStage, a 7-inch monitor designed for multi-tasking computer users who prefer to have their main screen for viewing Windows applications, and another smaller screen for extending their desktop to display instant messaging, watch videos, conduct video conferencing via webcams, display Yahoo® Widgets™ and Microsoft® Gadgets™, or house common tools from programs such as Adobe® PhotoShop®.

The SideStage is a stylish and compact USB 2.0-powered monitor with a 7-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) screen featuring 800 by 480 resolution with both landscape and portrait modes. Weighing only 1.34 pounds and housed in a sleek black frame, it is 7 inches wide, 4.6 inches tall and only ¾-inch thick.

It will be on display this week at CES 09 in the South Hall Meeting Room S218 of the Las Vegas Convention Center and by appointment at off-site demo hotel suites.

“This latest addition to our family of digital home solutions is designed to add productivity to PC users while providing a convenient and friendly way to view smaller applications,” according to Steven Joe, president and CEO, D-Link Systems, Inc. “The SideStage solves the problem of needing a bit more screen space, providing quick access to commonly accessed applications hidden behind larger Windows on the desktop.”

The SideStage is compatible with virtually all CRT and flat panel monitors, has standard and wide screen aspect ratios, 32-bit True Color depth for high-quality images and ultra low power consumption, consistent with the D-Link Green™ initiative.

Price and Availability

Pricing for the SideStage will be announced when the product ships later this year to D-Link’s vast network of retail outlets.
